Annette Edgar was born, brought up and educated in the East End of Glasgow. After raising her family she went on to study Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art where her tutors included David Donaldson, Duncan Shanks, Barbara Rae and Sandy Moffat. On graduating with a BA (Hons) in 1980, she went on to teacher training and worked in various teaching posts to ensure a regular income for her family.
Since 1990 she has been painting full time and has shown extensively in the UK with paintings in many private, corporate and public collections.
Her influences range from Post Impressionism to American Abstract Expressionism as well as Bomberg, Auerbach, Hitchens and Hodgkins.

A series of paintings is a bit like a conversation. You start off with one subject, which leads you into another. Very often in our everyday conversation we will say one thing but there may be all sorts of hidden meanings within. We may be saying amusing and witty things, yet underneath this, there is perhaps an underlying sadness.
Within my works there are often many layers, some visible, some not. Sometimes these layers are simplifying and clearing space so as to invite the spectator in to become a participant in the dialogue.
Many of my recent paintings refer to landscape, often with motifs such as tents and other structures. Currently references include pathways, rivers and pools. The stimuli for the work are part memory, part dream, part prediction. I have to make this journey, to a new plane, in paint with all its mystery and fluid magic. I need to go there to make sense of this world.
